"Woven" Hand Painted Batik Silk Scarf
In this work I use the traditional resist method of wax batik to explore surface-pattern and design. Through mark-making, painting, and improvisation I create a collection of one of a kind textiles for the body. I use brushes to hand paint hot wax on to the silk surface. I then paint over the waxed design and exposed silk with translucent fiber reactive dye. I continue to cover the piece with wax building layers of color and pattern until the darkest layer is achieved. The wax is then removed and the piece is returned to its original state.
The hand dyed color has an abrash likeness, with striated color variations ranging from sand to taupe, and light aqua blue and white. It is a traditional dress weight of silk, and is finished with a hand rolled hem. It can be hand washed cold and hung dry. It can also be ironed. This piece is a large square and it’s versatility is limited to your imagination.
